Most artists allow culture to shape them. Every once in a while, an artist emerges and actually does the opposite. Trailblazing comes second nature for Melody Thornton. She’s gone from being a key member of multi-platinum selling pop juggernaut Pussycat Dolls, to a fascinating and fabulous solo career completely on her own terms. Rather than sticking to the script, she continues to challenge both herself and the environment around her. Meet Melody Thornton…

Thornton discovered her passion for music at a young age. Knowing that ‘when she grew up she wanted to be famous’, Mel was quickly thrust into the spotlight. At just 19-years-old she went from turning heads at school talent shows in her native Arizona, to joining one of the most celebrated girl groups/dance ensembles
of all time.

Purring on to the big stage with the Pussycat Dolls, the youngest member of the group Melody was affectionately given the nickname ‘Baby Doll.’ Collaborating with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop and RnB the group enjoyed mega success with hits ‘Buttons’ featuring ‘Snoop Dogg’ and the number one classic ‘Don’t Cha’ with ‘Busta Rhymes’. Which became the highest selling track in the United States by any girl group!
Selling over 70 million albums around the world, the Dolls reached every inch of the globe, becoming the most popular girl group of the past decade. After receiving copious Grammy nominations and winning multiple VMA awards, the group were honoured by being named in VH1’s Greatest Women in Music and the 10th Most Successful Girl Group of all Time! Hollywood soon called, with the ensembles music featuring in cinematic blockbusters, Slumdog Millionaire and Shark Tale. Branding out, the PCD re-recorded ‘Don’t Cha’ for video game, The Sims 2, as well as appearing in, Asphalt: Urban GT 2.

Proving their pulling power wasn’t limited to the stage, the girls imprinted their names in the world of fashion and beauty. The Pussycat Doll’s went on to design their own make up collection with Estee Lauder under the Stila brand, as well as producing a line of burlesque Doll inspired lingerie.
With the group Melody toured the globe in front of sold out venues worldwide and released two chart-topping full-length albums, PCD in 2005 and Doll Domination in 2008. The quintet went on hiatus in 2010, but Thornton’s journey had just begun.

Her first mixtape P.O.Y.B.L hit in 2012, and it immediately began to turn heads. Thornton’s impressive range and powerful delivery carried the offering with a combination of sass and savoir fare culled from her years on stage.
Mel embraced her earliest influences, while carving out a style all her own in the pro- cess. “I love classic sounds like strings and horn arrangements,” she admits. “I want to create something that’s very filmic. You could hear this in a movie score. I was raised on Shirley Bassey, Nancy Sinatra, B.B. King, The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, and Al Green. So, I’m always drawing inspiration from those sounds and infusing it into my own material. My music still maintains a youthful energy though. It isn’t a throwback. I’m looking forward while never forgetting where I came from.”

This is most definitely the future for Thornton, this multi platinum selling international superstar has ‘Elevator…ed’ to the ‘Top of the World’ and is ready for total ’Domination.’ Proving no one puts Baby in a corner Melody is much more than just a Doll, and this Pussycat has claws! Thornton is a true vocal powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with!
